Study shows wider statin use can reduce heart disease
Statins are currently used to minimize the risk of cardiovascular disease in people with high cholesterol. But researchers have found the treatment could benefit many more potential heart disease patients, including patients with low cholesterol levels.
Researchers Colin Baigent and colleagues from the Clinical Trial Service Unit at Oxford University and Anthony Keech and colleagues from the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre in Sydney reached their conclusions by combining data from 14 randomized trials of statins involving over 90,000 patients, The Lancet reports.
